Helleborus ‘Madame Lemonnier’ – first flowers of 2024

This year, I’m focused on the “craft” of gardening. On growing plants from seed and propagating plants from cuttings. These practices aren’t merely tasks. They’re a celebration of life’s cycle. A testament that joy and mastery in gardening comes from learning the “craft” of gardening.

Seed starting and propagation deepen my connection with the garden’s rhythms. It’s a decision to walk a path less trodden. Each seed sown and cutting nurtured is a lesson in patience and resilience.

I’m taking a conscious move away from the relentless buying of white-potted plants. It’s a pledge to appreciate the slow, rewarding process of cultivating beauty.

From the simplest beginnings. Gardening this way takes more time, but it provides a deep sense of awe.

I want to create a garden that’s a reflection of the values I cherish. Simplicity, sustainability, and the joy found in the act of growing plants.

Things I wanted to Share This Week

Seedtime and Harvest book by Christie Purifoy

I just finished reading a new book written by Christie Purifoy titled, Seedtime and Harvest.

This book explores how our gardens deepen our understanding of the world around us and give us a greater sense of belonging.

It reiterates a message that’s close to my heart. Our gardens matter. A lot.

If you love gardening and everything it represents, you will love this book.

This image shows Martha Stewart’s summer home, Skylands. was designed by Landscape Architect Jens Jensen. The home was originally designed for Edsel and Eleanor Ford and is a testament to the beauty of creation.

Jensen’s views on nature and conservation were ahead of their time. He has important lessons we need to learn today.  I was so impressed with his story that I made a video about him.

Genetically modified purple tomatoes

I understand that plant hybrids have greatly improved the quality of life for people, but I will confess that I am not a fan of GMO (genetically modified) crops.

What you think about this first-ever GMO purple tomato available to home gardeners?  Are you excited or weary?
