What Soil We Need to Grow Seeds
You Need to Use Seed Starting Mix
It is best to use a seed starting mix when you plant your seeds. This video discusses a few options.
As part of our Seed Starting Challenge, I will be doing an experiment where we compare the peat-based soil I typically use versus a peat-free version. Peat bogs are an important ecosystem. If it’s possible to keep the peat in the bogs rather than harvesting it for gardening, it’s better for everyone. That’s why I want to go peat-free. I’ve included a link to an article by the Maryland University Master Gardener Extension discussing why there is a push to go peat free.
Last season when I tried out a peat-free soil. The results were disastrous. The seedlings were stunted and unhealthy. But I am not giving up. That single experience doesn’t mean we can’t go peat free.
We are going to repeat the experiment again as part of this challenge in hopes of finding a peat free alternative we can use next season.
