How To Sterilize Your Containers
Why Should You Sterilize Your Containers?
Sterilizing containers for seed growing ensures healthy plant growth and prevents the spread of diseases.
Seeds are particularly vulnerable to pathogens, including fungi, bacteria and viruses, which can be present in soil or on previously used pots. These pathogens can cause seed rot, dampening-off (a fungal disease that kills seeds and seedlings before and after they emerge), and other diseases that reduce the chances of successful germination and growth.
By sterilizing our containers, gardeners are creating a safe environment for the seeds to germinate and grow. This is especially critical for seeds that take longer to germinate because they are exposed to potential pathogens for a longer period of time.
Using Hydrogen Peroxide to Sterilize Containers
Hydrogen peroxide is an effective sterilizing agent because it effectively kills microorganisms without leaving harmful residues that could affect seed growth. Using hydrogen peroxide is a safe, environmentally friendly alternative to harsher chemical treatments like bleach, making it a preferred choice for many gardeners.
The hydrogen peroxide needs to remain on the surface of the container for 10 minutes to sterilize the surface.
