Great Garden Plants
Great Garden Plants are located in beautiful western Michigan. They grow hundreds of sun perennials, shade perennials, shrubs, groundcovers, roses, hedge plants and so much more. You’ll find exciting new varieties as well as tried and true garden classics. They are interested in helping gardeners of all skill levels. I can speak personally about their excellent customer service and high quality plants. You’ll definitely want to check this place out!
Annie’s Annuals and Perennials
Annie’s Annuals and Perennials is a mail-order and retail nursery located in Richmond, California. What’s unique about this nursery is they grow most of their plants from seed outdoors. Not in greenhouses. They have a great website that makes it easy to locate plants based on your growing conditions.
Old House Gardens
Old House Gardens is the only American mail-order nursery devoted to heirloom bulbs. They are passionate about searching the world for bulbs that are at risk. They research their histories, recruit small farmers to grow them, and share them through their website and mail-order catalog. I can personally vouch for their excellent quality and customer service. Do yourself a favor and sign up for their newsletter. It’s excellent.
Bluestone Perennials
Bluestone Perennials is a second-generation family owned nursery that has been in business since 1972. They offer more than 1,000 perennials, shrubs, trees, and grasses. I can personally speak to their high quality plant material. Every plant comes in a 3.5″ square x 4″ deep 100% biodegradable pots made from coconut husk fibers (coir). You can plant the pots directly into the soil. This nursery gets high marks for sustainable packaging and great customer service.
US Perennials
US Perennials is a small mail-order nursery focusing on native plants. They only ship to states bordering and east of the Mississippi river in the United States. If you are lucky enough to live in those states, you will want to check out this nursery. I was impressed with their selection of shade and part-shade loving plants. I ordered 15 plants this season and all arrived in good health and quickly.
Digging Dog Nursery
Digging Dog Mail-Order and retail plant nursery specializes in unusual and hard-to-find plants. They are known for their creative catalog covers. They are located in California, but offer a wide variety of shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, trees, and vines that thrive in many different garden zones throughout the United States. This nursery comes highly recommended among plant enthusiasts.
Broken Arrow
Broken Arrow Mail-Order nursery has a passion for rare, unusual, and garden-worthy plants. They want to inspire a love of plants and they offer outstanding customer service and expert gardening advice. These folks are serious about plants. You can sense their enthusiasm when you read their website.
Mr. Maple
Mr. Maple is a family-owned mail-order nursery. They specialize in growing Japanese maples at affordable prices, including growing their own root stock. They have one of the best Japanese maple selections as well as other popular tree varieties including conifers. Definitely worth checking out.
Van Engelen Bulbs
Van Engelen bulbs offers high quality bulbs at affordable pricing. They have a huge selection and their website is a treasure trove of helpful gardening tips and information, including a resource section listing their favorite YouTube channels and various Horticulture organizations. I ordered a variety of bulbs from Van Engelen this season. They showed up on time and they are great quality bulbs. This is another mail-order nursery I can personally recommend.
Garden Crossings
Garden Crossings is an online and retail garden center. They specialize in annuals, perennials, shrubs, edibles, and succulents. Their website features helpful video content and a blog. The nursery is located in Zeeland, Michigan. This nursery is new to me and I am looking forward to scheduling an in-person visit.
