Designing a Garden for Year-Round Interest

You should enjoy your garden year round. Even in winter. You can’t rely on flowers once those cold temperatures hit. Successful Winter garden designs include evergreens, structures, and elements that help you know you’re in a garden even when it’s covered in a blanket of snow.

Evergreens Provide Winter Garden Interest

In my Michigan garden, I rely on evergreen trees and shrubs, vine-covered arbors, and wreaths to add winter interest. I recorded a video after the first snowfall so we can walk through the garden together and talk about what elements help keep the garden looking good through the winter.

My Favorite Evergreen Trees, Shrubs, and Vines

  • Arborvitae
  • Boxwood
  • Rhododendron
  • Honeysuckle vine

Your garden can absolutely look beautiful during the Winter. By following the guidelines in this article, you will create a space that looks like a garden, even under a blanket of snow.
