Finding Unique Design Inspiration for Your Garden

February 4, 2021 Newsletter

Finding desing inspiration for our gardens is important.

February is the perfect month to make plans for the upcoming garden season. It’s always a challenge to narrow down your choices and make those final decisions, isn’t it? What plants to use, what color scheme, what style?  There’s a lot to think about.

In this week’s newsletter, I’m sharing resources to help you find design inspiration for your garden.

Happy gardening,
Sue

Design Inspiration in the Toronto Music Garden

The Toronto Music Garden was created in 1999 by landscape architect Julie Moir Messervy in collaboration with renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma and the City of Toronto.  It’s the perfect space to find design inspiration for your garden.

Her garden was inspired by Cello Suite No.1 in G  Major, BWV 1007 by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Broken into six sections connected with a series of curving paths, the garden represents the 6 movements of the musical suite: The Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Menuets, and Gigue. Ms. Messervy explains that “… the six garden ‘movements’ flow from the different moods evoked by the music…”

If you’re looking for photographs showing clever plant combinations, check out Terra Nova Nurseries’ website. I stumbled onto their website quite by accident when I was searching for new shade-tolerant plants. The site is filled with tons of helpful garden information and design inspiration.

It’s bookmarked on my computer for future perusing.  Here’s a sample of what you will find.

The Amazing Pottery of Tracy Hervy

My latest obsession is Tracie Hervy’s hand-thrown pottery. Tracie describes her Bloomist collection as having all the superfluities stripped away to reveal their essence. The lines on this pottery are clean and minimalistic. Simply stunning work.

Inspired by the Dutch Masters

Janne Ford is a UK-based floral photographer and stylist. Relying solely on natural light, she creates incredible floral images.

If you are interested in learning how to take better photographs, check out her blog.  She has a great article explaining how she creates still life images inspired by the Dutch Masters.

The still lifes provide another source for design inspiration for your garden.
