Susan has always been an avid gardener since she was a little girl. Similarly, Tom’s first trip was at age 7 months to see his grandparents in Europe. And we’ve both always shared a passion for creating art and appreciating the art of other artists.
We think you can see where we’re going with this | Roadtrips!
Ok, maybe you didn’t see that coming, but hear us out. Regardless of which corner of the world we happen to be on, we point our car in a random direction and keep driving until we see something interesting on the horizon.
Often it’s a garden or an art event. Through our roadtrips we’ve come across some amazing gardens, art, and people.
The photo below is of Barnsley House in England from All About My Garden, Susan’s original gardening website.
What’s special about this photo? We had no idea where we were in England, but we were making good time getting there. As we were slowing to pass through a tiny village, one of Susan’s all time favorite gardens materialized around a sharp right bend in the road.
Making a u-turn past the village pub, we rolled into the gravel covered parking area of Barnsley House and walked in. It turned out that the home and gardens were private villas for people who wanted to get away from London for the weekend. Off limits to tourists like this.
But the English gentleman at the front desk, who recognized our enthusiasm and Susan’s knowledge of Barnsley House, suggested that if we purchased a snack and some tea and ate it out on the patio, there was really no one to check if we accidentally wandered through the garden. Which is exactly what we did.
This particular roadtrip was truly the genesis of Garden Moxie.
Since then, we’ve been back to Barnsley House as guests (highly recommended) and have continued pointing our car in no particular direction; driving until we find something interesting.
You’re invited to join us on our adventure!
